About Us
The Course
The Programme is designed to give students, a liberal business education and simultaneously prepare them for careers in managing human resources in industry. The emphasis of the programme is on an integrated understanding of the totality of business, its philosophy and socio-economic inter-relationship. The programme is specially designed to develop and enhance the basic managerial skills and abilities of students and equip them with appropriate tools of modern management for better decision-making.
This Course leads to the MHRM degree of Calcutta University. The degree is recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
Admissions & Selection
Admission are through CAT scores, followed by a GD & Interview on HR issues. For every seat 4 candidates are short listed based on CAT scores and only 30 odd make it to the first list. The Focus
Emphasize the fundamental concepts of management and how to apply these concepts/tools in the work.
Develop, articulate and implement solutions to business problems.
Case studies, projects, business simulations and work group / individual presentations are used to demonstrate how theory /concept actually works in the corporate world.
In class-room, business strategy is brought to life by visiting executives who offer insight on why businesses succeed or fail.
Faculty regularly incorporate breaking business news and trends into their lectures.
Students are encouraged to learn from close industry contacts and make presentations on observations
Eligibility
The following are the eligibility criteria for admission to MHRM course as per Calcutta University Regulations.
Bachelors degree with Honors in Arts / Science / Commerce or any of the professional courses (duration 4 years or more) like Engineering / Medical etc. form any university recognized by University of Calcutta. Final year students may also apply subject to conditions.

Familarisation Programme
Once a fair acquaintance has been made with the subject through the classroom tutelage and weekly seminars, the students are provided with an opportunity to experience for themselves the various HR and IR functions practiced in the industry. This unique feature entails each student to visit one factory / establishment once a week for three-four months at a stretch. Such a pragmatic approach, as a continuum of the constant interactions with the industry itself, is unrestricted too theories alone and allows the students to grow in knowledge and know-how. Students are required to give a presentation in front of academic and Industry experts followed by a detailed report at the end of the familarisation programme.
Summer Project
The summer Project is a integral part of the systemised learning structure imparted in the MHRM course. After the students are exposed to an all round education of theory and practice, they are each assigned projects by various firms / establishments which in turn tests the students' ability to implement the knowledge mustered through the year. The performance of each pupil is evaluated by the Institute based on the submission of a detailed project report in which one is expected to record ones analyses, observations and suggestions, if any.

Research Project
The course curriculum of MHRM concentrates on imparting an overall knowledge of the management issues that plague or delight the entire corporate world, and not the human resource department alone. (For more details click here)
Final Placement
Towards the end of second year the students gear for joining the corporate world in various capacities. Given the rich mix of the batch, response from the Industry has been encouraging. The strict selection procedure ensures the students live up to the name of IISWBM, the oldest b-school of the country.
PLACEMENTS 2004 - At a Glance
Given the changing economic scenario of the country, and the growing importance of HR as a strategic function; the same was reflected in the Placements 2004 to a great extent. IT & ITES companies like USHA Comm, Nicco Internet Ventures were the largest recruiters followed closely by consultants like Research Engineers & Consultants. Venture Capitals were a suprising move with Scandent & Innovest Strategic Value Advisors. Also on the campus were retail biggies like Pantaloons. Summers on the other hand had some renowned names like TATA Steel, Indian Oil, ITC Hotels, ABP, Reserve Bank of India to name a few, reflecting the growing demand for HR in the Industry.
The Highest salary offered was 3.0 Lac and the average at 2.5 Lac.
Training Programmes
Students actively take part in various events organised by the Industry bodies like CII, FICCI, ISTD, NHRD etc. This helps the students to interact directly with the Industry and gather extensive knowledge.
Self Development
Various self-development & Language courses are organised by the Institute throughout the year with help of inhouse faculty or external agencies like alliance Francis, Art of good living etc.
Student Bodies
Student bodies function throughout the year looking to various areas of the course. These bodies regularly interact with the college management on various issues and have laid down activities to be done throughout the academic session. Some of these Cells are:
Placement Cell: Main objective of this cell is to help students get placement for Summers & Final Placement. It also carries out PR activities and maintains a communication channel with the Corporates.
Events Cell: Main objective of this cell is to conduct events throughout the year to promote MHRM and IISWBM. "Genesis" the annual mega event of MHRM is managed by this Cell.
IT Cell: Main objective of this cell is to manage all IT requirements for MHRM,
including management of the Course Website, Groups, Alumni Network etc. The Cell also assists all other cells with their IT requirements.
Aakriti (Creative Cell): Main objective of this cell is to provide creative inputs to other cells. It is responsible for designing and printing of Placement Brochures, Soveiners, "Maanav" HR Journal etc.
Management Events & Games
Students regularly participate in Management Events & Games held in campus or at other B-schools. across the country.

Course Curriculum
The course structure has been developed by the Senate, University of Calcutta with assistance form the academic experts and Industry bodies. The University regulations provides for periodic review and updating of the course so as to bring it at par with the requirements of the Industry. This ensures that upcoming topics are regularly incorporated by the Institute so that the students are well equipped with the power of knowledge before they join the Corporate world.
The course curriculum consists of 40 modules apart from viva & project work divided under 12 papers. All modules are required to be cleared for grant on degree from Calcutta University. (Click here to view course curriculum)
